So Bad They're Good - Top 50 Movies: Part III (#30 - 21)

30. Cane Toads: An Unnatural History

Year: 1988
Director: Mark Lewis
Genre(s): Documentary

Think it's weird that there's a documentary on this list? Well, this is admittedly a pretty bizarre entry, but it's the bizarreness that makes it so memorable. At less than an hour long, this documentary manages to be informative, wacky, and kind of genius in how it presents itself.

Best Moment: A man swerving all over the road to kill those blasted toads.

29. Silent Night Deadly Night, Part 2

Year: 1987
Director: Lee Harry
Genre(s): Horror

The first half of this movie is basically just replaying scenes from the original, spliced with new scenes of an interrogation with a character pkayed by Eric Freeman. If you don't know who this is, you're not the only one, but you'll be grateful to me for bringing him to your attention. This guy is totally amazing, making what could have been an unbearable and pointless sequel into something I couldn't stop laughing at by the end.

Best Moment: Any of the scenes with Eric Freeman. And yes, this includes "GARBAGE DAY".

28. Clash of the Titans

Year: 1981
Director: Desmond Davis
Genre(s): Action / Adventure / Fantasy

Alright, so this one isn't a *totally* lame movie. It has some cool effects, it's not completely ridiculous and stupid, but it has a certain campy quality that I can't help but to love. Movies like this aren't able to be made nowadays (the proof is in the god-awful remake that has absolutely zero charm), the whole thing feeling like a fun little time capsule from a pre-CG era. It honestly feels like it could have been made in the '50s, and I mean that in the best way possible.

Best Moment: Ray Harryhausen effects. They're just really good.

27. Treevenge

Year: 2008
Director: Jason Eisener
Genre(s): Horror / Comedy

A funny little revenge horror comedy about a Christmas tree revolution. It's hard to really go into this one without basically describing the entire plot, but it's not as much about the story and twists in this one as it is about the absurdity and over-the-top gore that comes along with it. It's only like 15-20 minutes long, so there's really no reason not to watch this one if you enjoy this kind of campy crap.

Best Moment: The evil lumberjacks invade the tree village...

26. The Monster of Phantom Lake

Year: 2006
Director: Christopher R. Mihm
Genre(s): Sci-Fi / Horror / Comedy

A B-movie parody of science fiction from the '50s and '60s, complete with a goofy monster costume, a sing-a-long around a campfire, and cops on canoes! What more could you ask for? Christopher R. Mihm has made a handful of fun movies all in this general style, and while I prefer Larry Blamire (don't worry, he'll be on here soon enough), this guy is one of the few filmmakers out there who just seems to have fun making cheesy movies that don't deliberately alienate audiences.

Best Moment:

25. Demons

Year: 1985
Director: Lamberto Bava
Genre(s): Horror

I still don't fully know if this movie was supposed to be as funny as it was, but who cares? Italian horror movies have a tendency of being pretty out there, and this one is about as crazy as they get, simultaneously being funny and actually creepy at the same time. I need to watch this again, but it's still left a strong impression on me as being a total cheesy blast.

Best Moment: The super angry badass black guy.

24. Killer Klowns From Outer Space

Year: 1988
Director: Stephen Chiodo
Genre(s): Sci-Fi / Horror / Comedy

One of the more popular cheesy movies out there (pretty much everyone seems to be familiar with this one), and believe me, that doesn't take anything away from just how much fun this is. Isn't that weird? Being popular doesn't necessarily translate to being bad? Crazy. This movie is just a stroke of genius. Every awesome thing you could think up that could be implemented into a movie about evil space clowns is seen here, and all these ideas work perfectly.

Best Moment: Shadow puppet monsters that eat people.

23. The Happening

Year: 2008
Director: M. Night Shyamalan
Genre(s): Sci-Fi / Thriller

Not traditionally seen as being one of the funniest movies ever made, but I don't understand why not. Sure, it's attempting to be a thriller or horror movie (or god knows what..), but everything about it screams cheesy hilarity. The story is like something a 12-year old would come up with (as opposed to his previous movie, Lady In The Water, which was more like a 5-year old did it), the dialogue and acting is so stiff and weird you wouldn't be surprised if the actors were all cyborgs, and the way the movie is shot is so distinctly Shyalamalan, you can't help but to love it just for how cramped and awkward every shot looks. Maybe it only takes a snob to fully appreciate this movie for the disasterpiece that it us, but I love it regardless.

Best Moment: Mark Wahlberg. Everything about his in this movie is perfect.

22. Garth Marenghi's Darkplace

Year: 2004
Director: Richard Ayoade
Genre(s): Comedy / Sci-Fi / Horror / Drama

Okay, this is where I feel people can start complaining about how corrupted my list has become, do let's let the elephant out of the bag: I am fully aware that this was a TV show. Okay? But, seeing as how it only ran for 6 episodes, this is like watching one of those Stephen King miniseries/TV movies, which is kind of perfect, considering that's exactly what this show was making fun of. This one hits every target right on the head, and with its pseudo-documentary behind the scenes approach, you get to witness hilarious parody on both sides of the camera. It may not be a movie, but this show is perfect for the list, and still only runs less than 3 hours in length.

Best Moment: Richard Ayoade's astounding performance(s).

21. Road House

Year: 1989
Director: Rowdy Herrington
Genre(s): Action / Drama

Another classic among bad movie aficionados, this rowdy (HA! GET IT? Cuz it's the name of the director? Damn, I'm good), brawly bar bouncer movie is one of the best cheesy action movies ever made. There's really not a lot about this movie that hasn't already been touched upon a million times, but to keep it short, this movie features sweaty shirtless fistfights, Swayze trying desperately hard to be badass, Sam Elliott WITHOUT A MUSTACHE, and a giant stuffed bear falling on people. So yeah, it's pretty much perfect.

Best Moment: Swayze rips out a dude's eyeballs.

Sorry, but Garth Marenghi's Darkplace is, in fact, so good that it's great.

I always liked Clash of the Titans! And Im guessing there are plenty of people who would argue that Road House is a good movie as well
