'My Two Favorite People'
Season 1, Episode 9
Jake discovers that time he spends with Finn takes away from time he can spend with his girlfriend, Lady Rainicorn, and time he spends with Lady takes away from time he could be adventuring with Finn. So he decides to try to make Finn and Lady become friends: a plan which backfires as Finn and Lady get along a little too well, as they spend all their time with each other, causing Jake to feel threatened by this budding friendship.
This is the first episode of the show to really handle any kind of relationship issues. I think we've all been in this position at some point, trying to force our partner and friend(s) to become friends with each other, or even if just when trying to get two different friend groups together. It's a tricky maneuver that rarely works as planned, with you sitting in the middle trying way harder than you ever should have to with people you care about. And sometimes, the plan backfires in the wrong way and you wind up feeling left out in the cold, being stuck as the third wheel on a bike you yourself brought along. Jake's frustration and hurt feelings are totally justified and understandable, as he tries to get Finn and Lady closer. The major issue with this episode comes from the inherent lightheartedness, as DiMaggio isn't quite able to convey as much frustration as he probably should due to the childish nature of the show, but he still gets the feelings across well enough. This isn't a bold, adventurous episode nor is it one filled with drama and emotion, but rather a small story with a difficult message on how you can't always get what you want -- especially when the moving parts involve people.
